Box Score STERLING, Kan. – The Westminster College men's soccer team used two first half goals to defeat Sterling (Kan.), 2-1, on Friday afternoon at the Sterling College Soccer Field.
Westminster improves to 6-3-1 overall on the season and record their first road win of the season. The loss drops Sterling to 3-5-1 this year.
The Griffins would get on the board in the 20th minute in a goal by
Jace Maxfield. The senior found the back of the net for the second time this season.
Omar Jaimes would push the lead to 2-0 when he scored in the 36th minute. It was the first career goal for Jaimes and it turned out to be the game-winner. The assist on the goal was credited to
Manuel Duenas.
Eric Rodriguez scored the only goal of the game for Sterling in the 52nd minute. Rodriguez took a pass from Daren Casey and put his shot past the Griffins keeper,
Nathan Young.
Westminster finished the afternoon with a 14-11 edge in shots and they put five of those shots on frame. Maxfield and
Gabe Gonzalez recorded three shots apiece to lead the Griffins with each putting one on target. Young recorded three saves to pick up his second win of the season.
The Griffins return to action on Saturday when they face No. 18 Kansas Wesleyan at noon.
