Dominican Ends Griffins Winning Streak

Box Score SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – The sixth-ranked Westminster College men's lacrosse team saw its season opening four-game winning streak come to an end with an 11-3 loss at Dominican (Calif.) on Thursday afternoon.

Westminster is now 4-1 overall this season, although the loss won't count against their MCLA record as Dominican is an NCAA program. Dominican improves to 2-1 on the year with the victory.

The Penguins opened the contest with five straight goals, including a 4-0 lead after the opening quarter.  Andy Butterfield got the Griffins on the board with 8:58 to play in the second quarter on his second goal of the season. Dominincan responded with four consecutive goals to build an 8-1 lead. Matt Hearn scored with 39 seconds left in the third for the Griffins and then Brett Bird added the final Westminster goal with 7:25 remaining.

Westminster was outshot in the game 37-29, but they were 0-for-6 in extra-man opportunities.  They won 11-of-17 face-offs and had a 27-23 advantage in ground balls.

Jake Arthur led the Griffins with nine shot attempts while Gian Sexsmith adding five shots. Sexsmith did record an assist in the game.  Marshall Serzen won another 11 face-offs in 17 attempts and led the team with five ground balls. Chris Burckle made eight saves during his 53 minutes in the Westminster cage.

Next for the Griffins is the home opener against Montana. The game is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday at Dumke Field and will be broadcast live on Griffins TV.
