SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster College men's soccer team used a
Gabe Gonzalez overtime goal to defeat La Sierra 2-1 on Friday afternoon at Dumke Field. The game-winner came in the 108th minute and propelled the Griffins to their second straight win.
Westminster (2-1) controlled much of the action all afternoon and finished the contest with a 23-6 advantage in shots attempted. While they failed to score in the opening half,
Dennis Sellis put Westminster in front 1-0 in the 63rd minute. Sellis got his head on a corner kick from
Ryan Smith and put it into the upper netting for his second goal of the year.
La Sierra managed the equalizer just 10 minutes later. Jonas Ornelas cleaned up a scramble in front of the Westminster net and put the ball away to level the score at 1-1.
Neither team managed much offense during the first 10 minute of overtime, but after the mini-break the griffins came out attacking. Gonzalez had a free kick stopped by the La Sierra keeper and then
Ryan Smith hit the crossbar with a shot.
Finally Gonzalez got a run down the left side where Sellis played him a ball. Gonzalez was all alone with the keeper and beat him inside the far post for the walk off win and his first goal of the year.
The Griffins hit the post twice in the game and also had two shots blocked before they could get to the cage. They fired seven corner kicks and suffered 11 fouls by La Sierra.
Sellis attempted a team-leading nine shots with four on frame.
Skyler Doran got three shots away with Gonzalez recorded the two shots on goal.
Damir Sabanovic recorded two saves for his first win of the season in between the pipes.
Westminster will look for a third straight win when they host McPherson College at Dumke Field on Saturday. First kick is slated for 2 p.m.
