Box Score PHOENIX, Ariz. – The Westminster College men's soccer team got back to .500 with a 3-0 win over Arizona Christian on Friday evening. Westminster snapped a two-match losing streak with the win and improved to 8-8-1 on the season.
Jace Maxfield put the Griffins in front 1-0 in the 40th minute with the first of his two goals in the game. The game would remain 1-0 until the 60th minute when
Kaden Anselmo tallied his first goal of the season to make it 2-0 for the Griffins. Maxfield would then add the final goal in the 85th minute to seal the win.
This is the first two-goal game in Maxfield's career and he is the first Griffin other than
Dennis Sellis to score multiple goals in a game this season. All three assists were awarded to
Manuel Duenas and the freshman now leads the team with five assists on the season.
Westminster held Arizona Christian (0-14-1) without a shot attempt in the game while getting 24 shots off themselves. The Griffins took seven corner kicks and forced the home team into 12 saves.
Sellis attempted six shots in the contest with five on goal. Maxfield got four shots away with
Ryan Smith and
Wilson Larson getting three shots apiece.
Nathan Young played the first 75 minutes in goal for his fourth win on the season.
Westminster will play its final game of the regular season on Saturday when they travel to Prescott, Ariz. to face Embry-Riddle (Ariz.). The game is crucial for the two teams fighting to make the Unaffiliated Frontier Tournament at Dumke Field next month.
