Dennis Sellis scored two goals to the lead the Westminster College men's soccer team to a 3-0 win over York College on Sunday afternoon. This was the second game in as many days for Westminster after a loss at Northwestern (Iowa) on Saturday.
With the victory, the Griffins record climbs to 7-6-1 on the season. York drops to 3-6-2.
Sellis struck in the 10th minute to put Westminster in front 1-0.
Ryan Beck played the ball in the box where Sellis would get his head on the ball and direct it into the net. It was the team-leading fourth assist of the year for Beck and the 10th goal of the year for Sellis.
In the 13th minute it would be Sellis striking again. This time he would be played a ball from
Wilson Larson that he turned and fired into the back of the net. The goal marked the third time this season that Sellis has scored twice in the same game. For Larson, it was his third assist of the year.
The Griffins would add a third goal in the 20th minute on an owl goal by York. The York defender tried to head the ball out of trouble but, it deflected into the net instead. The goal was the second time this year that Westminster had benefited from an own goal by the opposition.
Westminster had an 11-4 advantage in shots attempted for the game and put five of those shots on frame. Each team was awarded four corner kicks and the Griffins were whistled for five fouls. York was called for 19 fouls along with eight yellow cards and two red cards.
Sellis put two of his five shots on frame and
Jace Maxfield recorded two shots with both on goal.
Nathan Young earned the shutout victory in the net by making two saves.
Westminster will continue its season-ending six-game road trip on Friday when they visit Billings, Mont. for a game against Rocky Mountain College.
