Northwestern Stops Griffins, 2-0

ORANGE CITY, Iowa – The Westminster College men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss against Northwestern (Iowa) on Saturday afternoon.  Westminster allowed two first half goals in their first road game since Sept. 11.

With the loss, Westminster drops to 6-6-1 on the season while Northwestern improves to 6-3-1 with the victory.

The Raiders would take a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute on a goal from Adam Abuhadema.  Mario Garcia played the ball to Abuhadema who then put a shot in the net past the Westminster keeper Damir Sabanovic.

Northwestern would push the lead to 2-0 just 31 seconds later.  Gabriel Goncalves would first a shot from just inside the penalty area for the final tally of the afternoon.

Westminster finished the match with a 19-11 advantage in total shots and had 13 shots in the second half.  The Griffins managed seven shots on goals while also attempting four corner kicks and suffering 15 fouls by Northwestern.

Dennis Sellis and Skyler Doran attempted four shots apiece with Sellis putting three of his attempts on frame.  Lucas Matelich got off three shots while three other attempted two shots.  Sabanovic suffered the loss by allowing those two goals in the first half.  He made two saves and was replaced at halftime by KC John.  John didn't allow a goal while making two stops in the final 45 minutes.

Westminster will complete this two-game road trip on Sunday when they face York College at 3:30 p.m. in York, Neb.
