SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's golf team won the first event of the 2010-11 Frontier Conference season and the first team title in school history on Tuesday. The Griffins shot a final round 335 to give them a three-round total of 985 and the title. Westminster finished in last place in the final standings of the 2009-10 season.
The Griffins won the event after placing three individual in the top four.
Jenteal Jackson became the first Westminster individual to win a women's event after shooting a final round 80 for a tournament total of 235. Jackson finished five strokes ahead of her teammate,
Mikayla Williamson. Williamson finished at 240 after a final round 240. Candace Dechent placed fourth overall with her 247 total score.
Brandi Bork and
Keni Nelson also placed in the top 16 with scores of 269 and 270 respectively.
Rocky Mountain finished second behind the Griffins with a team score of 999. Rocky matched the Griffins final round 335couldn't make up any ground on the Griffins after the teams shot matching scores of 335 on Tuesday. Katy Peterson of Rocky finished third overall with her 241. Rachel Hosterman, also of Rocky, placed fifth with a 250.
The Westminster men's golf team finished fourth in the men's event. The Griffins shot a 295 in the final round which was five shots off the lead for the round. That round gave them a 918 final score which was one stroke behind Carroll for third place.
Collin Wilinson led the Griffins with his total score of 226. Wilkinson placed eighth overall after shooting a final round 74 on Monday.
Matt Bushman finished ninth overall after shooting a 1-under par 71 in the final round to finish with a 228.
Alex Howlett,
Brian Panter, and
Bryce Till also finished inside the top 20 for the Griffins.
Lewis-Clark State won the men's event with a totacl score if 884. The Warriors shot 290 on Tuesday to run away with the title by 25 strokes. Conner McCracken and Drew Reinland tied for the top individual honors with a three-round score of 219. Reinland rallied to tie for the lead with a final round 70, but then was defeated by McCracken on the first playoff hole for the individual title.
