SALT LAKE CITY – The 17th-ranked men's soccer team got two second half goal from
Nic Duncan to lead them to a 2-1 win over Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) on Sunday afternoon at Dumke Field. Westminster (6-1) held off a late charge from the visitors to secure a fifth consecutive win. The winning streak matches the longest streak the team had last season.
Duncan gave the Griffins a 1-0 lead when he headed in a direct kick cross from
Jesse Blais in the 69th minute. It became 2-0 in the 82nd minute when Duncan again used his head to put away a
Jordan Conroy corner kick. Embry-Riddle (3-5) scored on a penalty kick from Magi Manresa in the 89th minute.
Westminster held a 20-12 advantage in shots, including a 12-4 cushion after the intermission. The Griffins fought off six corner kicks from Embry-Riddle and limited them to just six shots on goal. The game was physical throughout and featured 14 fouls and four cautions.
Duncan scored his two goals on the only two shots he attempted.
Damian Malouf recorded a team-best four shots and
Jace Maxfield recorded three shots. The team had 11 different players recorded at least one shot while six of them had multiple opportunities.
Damir Sabanovic improved to 4-0 on the season with five saves. The late PK goal snapped a streak of 331 minutes without allowing a goal.
Westminster next will take to the road for the first time of the season. They open a three-game in three day road trip on September 17 in Olathe,Kansas against MidAmerica Nazarene They will also face Baker University and Kansas Wesleyan on the road trip.
