No. 17 Westminster Earns Shutout of Sterling College

SALT LAKE CITY – The 17th-ranked Westminster men's soccer team picked up an impressive 3-0 win over Sterling College on Dumke Field Saturday evening. Westminster (5-1) won for the fourth consecutive time and extended the team's shutout streak to 256 minutes.

Dennis Sellis put the Griffins on the board with his fifth goal of the season in the 22nd minute. Sellis gathered a 50/50 ball and then blasted it inside the far post from just inside the box for his fourth consecutive game-winning goal. Gary Gonzalez made it 2-0 when he finished a cross from Gabe Gonzalez in the 42nd minute. Gabe Gonzalez collected the ball off a scramble in the box and put it past the keeper to make it 3-0 Westminster in the 48th minute.

Westminster controlled the game throughout and finished with a 22-3 advantage in shots attempted. Sterling (1-3) didn't record the team's first shot until the 79th minute of the contest. The Griffins managed 10 shots on frame and also attempted four corner kicks.

Sellis and Gabe Gonzalez each recorded a team-high four shots with Matt Jimenez getting three shots away. In all, 10 different Griffins recorded at least one shot attempt. Nathan Young earned his first career shutout while making one save and lowering his goals against average to 0.67 on the season.

Westminster will complete a season opening seven-game home stand when they face Embry-Riddle (Ariz.) on Sunday, September 12 at 12:30 p.m. The Griffins are 30-8-2 all-time at Dumke Field and are 9-0-2 all-time against Embry-Riddle.
