Box Score 2 SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's lacrosse team split two games on Dumke Field on Saturday morning. The Griffins defeated Air Force 10-7 to start the day. Wyoming took a 10-9 decision over the Griffins in the second game. Westminster is now 4-5 on the season and 1-2 in the Rocky Mountain Women's Lacrosse League.
Westminster started strong against Air Force, scoring the first three goals of the game in the opening six minutes. After leading 5-3 at the intermission, the Griffins again scored the first three goals of the second half to put the game out of reach.
Westminster recorded 25 shots to just eight by Air Force and finished with a 52-26 advantage in ground balls. The Griffins also forced 26 turnovers and won 14-of-19 draws.
Kaicee Beal scored four times had one assists and collected six ground balls for the Griffins. Sage West added three goals and one assist to go with her five ground balls.
Lindsey Mark had two goals and
Jillian Tesfazion had one.
Westminster played from behind much of the game with Wyoming. With 10:50 remaining in the first half Wyoming held a 5-1 lead. The Griffins outscored the visitors 8-5 from there on out, but could never get a lead. Westminster tied the game at six with 18:44 remaining after Beal scored three consecutive goals. After a 2-0 Wyoming run, Beal and
Yvonne Sumampong scored to make the score 8-8 with 5:44 to play.
Wyoming again scored consecutive goals which were followed by another goal from Sumampong to make it 10-9 with 1:59 left. Beal had an opportunity to tie the score with 1:07 to play, but her shot was turned away by the Wyoming goalie.
Each team attempted 18 shots and Westminster collected 36 ground balls to 33 by Wyoming. The Griffins forced 26 Wyoming turnovers, but committed 29 themselves and won just 11-of-21 draws.
Beal finished with five goals, two assists, and five ground balls. West added one goal, two assists, four ground balls, and three draw controls.
Carson Chambers came up with 11 ground balls, one off a school record.
Jessie Mulvey made five saves between the pipes.
Westminster returns to action on Friday, March 19 when they host Brigham Young at 6 p.m. on Dumke Field. The Griffins will also face Pepperdine on Saturday, March 20 in the regular season home finale.
