Westminster’s Lam Reaches Utah Women’s State Amateur Final

7/23/2026 10:34:00 AM

Ashley Lam, Westminster University's rising junior and two-time RMAC individual champion, punched her ticket to the 36-hole final of the 120th Utah Women's State Amateur Championship, set for Thursday at Oakridge Country Club.

Lam advanced with a hard-fought semifinal victory over Utah Tech's Samantha Phelan, winning on the 19th hole after a back-and-forth match that went down to the wire. Lam trailed Phelan 1-up at the turn before rallying with back-to-back birdies through the first three holes of the back nine. Phelan reclaimed a 1-up edge through 16, but Lam answered on the 17th hole before closing out the match with a par-save on the first extra hole.

It marks the first women's amateur final of Lam's career, and she will face no easy task in Thursday's 36-hole championship. Standing across from her will be six-time champion Kelsey Chugg of Bonneville GC, who dispatched New Mexico State's Rylee Salome 2 and 1 in Wednesday's other semifinal. Chugg, a mid-amateur superstar making her eighth women's amateur final in 15 tournament appearances, birdied the eighth and ninth holes to take a 2-up lead through nine and held on despite Salome pulling within one on the par-3 15th. Chugg sealed the match with a par-save on No. 16 before clinching on the 17th green.

Lam, who was making her second consecutive women's amateur semifinal appearance, will look to claim her first Utah Women's State Amateur title when the 36-hole final tips off Thursday at Oakridge Country Club.
