Grand Junction, Colo. — In a dramatic finish to the regular season, the Westminster men's lacrosse team earned a thrilling 10-9 overtime win against rival Colorado Mesa on Saturday afternoon at Community Hospital Unity Field.
Duke DeVault played the hero, netting the game-winning goal just under three minutes into the extra period off a feed from Luke Sillstrop. The win gives Westminster critical momentum heading into the upcoming RMAC Tournament.
It was a back-and-forth battle throughout, with the Griffins erasing a three-goal second-quarter deficit and taking an 8-6 lead by the end of the third. Colorado Mesa responded in the fourth to force overtime, but Westminster held their composure when it mattered most.
Camden Rossi scored twice early, while Sean Gragnola led the Griffins with three goals, including a key fourth-quarter tally to momentarily put Westminster back in front. Luke Sillstrop added two goals and two assists in a strong offensive showing.
At the face-off X, Fairbanks dominated for Westminster, winning 12-of-18 draws to help the Griffins control possession. In goal, Christain Jones was outstanding, making 17 saves on the day to anchor the defense, including several key stops in overtime.
With the win, the Griffins now turn their focus to the RMAC Tournament, with the bracket set to be released later this weekend.
