Westminster came up just short in a tightly contested RMAC battle on Saturday afternoon, falling 80–79 on the road at UCCS after a game that featured 10 ties and 10 lead changes. The Griffins shot 49.2% from the field and outscored the Mountain Lions 47–49 in the second half, but a late free throw in the final 30 seconds proved to be the difference.
Westminster held a 32–31 halftime lead, fueled by early threes from Tommy Ball, who finished with 11 points on 4–9 shooting and 3–8 from three. UCCS countered with a strong perimeter night, hitting 11 threes and shooting 42.3% from beyond the arc.
The Griffins received major production off the bench, scoring 50 bench points, led by Mitch Jeppesen's career night with 18 points on 9–13 shooting and 7 rebounds. Jake Nadauld added 17 points, going 5–9 from the floor and 6–7 at the line, while Boston Painter chipped in 6 points, 4 rebounds, and a key block.
Colin Hayes posted 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals in 14 minutes, and Michael Fraizer added 6 points and 3 rebounds.
With the game tied 79–79 in the final minute, UCCS converted one of two free throws to regain the lead with 22 seconds left. Westminster had a final look at the rim, but the shot at the buzzer didn't fall.
UCCS was led by Brody Hull's 29 points and Jezza McKenzie's 12, improving to 2–0 in RMAC play. Westminster moves to 5–3 overall and 0–2 in conference, returning home next week seeking its first RMAC win.
