SALT LAKE CITY— Westminster College Director of Athletics Shay Wyatt announced today that women's basketball head coach Jenteal Jackson has resigned to become the next head women's basketball coach at Weber State University.
"I would like to thank Coach Jackson for her 11 years of service and contributions to Westminster College and our women's basketball program," Wyatt stated. "Jenteal has been instrumental in the continued success of our women's basketball program serving as our head coach the past two seasons, as well as the nine prior seasons as the lead assistant coach. We wish her the best with this new opportunity at Weber State University."
This past season, Jackson guided the Griffins to a 17-12 record in 2022-23 and a second consecutive trip to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament (RMAC).
Coach Jackson said, "I will be forever grateful for my time spent at Westminster. It seems impossible to say everything I want in a few sentences. Westminster is an incredible institution, with so many great people and so much to offer. My experience here has been nothing short of amazing and it has helped shape me in so many ways. I have grown up here, going from player to coach and I can't thank this College enough for all it has given me.
I would like to thank Shay Wyatt, who trusted in me and gave me several opportunities, which ultimately made me the coach I am today. I want to thank Shelley Jarrard, who I can't say enough about. She has been the best mentor, but even better, she has become a lifelong friend. I'd also like to thank President Dobkin and Glenn Smith. They have supported myself, my staff, and my team in more ways than people know, and I appreciate all they have done for our program. I'd also like to thank my staff. They have put in countless hours to better our program and help our players, on and off the court.
Lastly, I want to thank my players. All of the athletes who have come through our program and those that are still here. It has been a joy coaching them and I am so grateful for all they have given to me, Westminster, and our program. I will always cherish our time together.
I'll miss this place, the program we built, the success we have had, and the people I have had the privilege of working with. I am excited for my next chapter and can't wait to continue my coaching career as the next head women's basketball coach at Weber State University."
Jackson will depart Westminster with a 34-21 (.618) career record. Under her direction, six players received all-conference recognition. In 2021-22, the RMAC recognized her team with a Brechler Award for having the highest cumulative GPA (3.655) for women's basketball in the conference. The women's basketball team went 149-67 overall (NAIA and NCAA Division II) and 107-48 in conference play (Frontier Conference and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) in Jackson's nine years as Coach Shelley Jarrard's assistant. Jackson helped coach and recruit 89 all-conference, all-academic and all-America players.
"Weber State is getting an outstanding strategic coach and a loyal integrity-first person. We wish her the best in her future and are confident she will continue her successful ways. She has been instrumental in many championships at every level, and I know she cannot wait for the next one, said Shelley Jarrard, Associate Athletics Director. We are grateful for her time at Westminster as a student-athlete, an assistant coach, and a head coach. On a personal level, I feel so fortunate that our career paths have intertwined as they have. I am extremely happy and excited to watch her continue to grow, evolve - and win - in Weber State's women's basketball program."
Jackson, a former two-sport athlete at Westminster, played two seasons on the women's basketball team from 2010-2012 after transferring from Brigham Young, and competed on the golf team from 2010-2013. She played 67 games in the Purple and Gold, dishing out 248 assists (3.7 per game), averaging nine points, 3.7 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. She played for two Frontier Conference regular season championship teams, making the postseason both years and advancing to the Elite Eight in the 2012 NAIA National Championship. She also starred for the golf team, playing 44 rounds in 17 tournaments, recording four individual wins, two team Frontier Conference titles, and two individual Player of the Year awards, while posting an average score of 79.52.
Wyatt announced a search for a new head coach will begin at once. A position announcement will be posted on the Westminster College job board at Westminster College Portal | Home (peopleadmin.com) for interested applicants.
