Salt Lake City, UT – A new season, under a new head coach for Westminster Women's Lacrosse is set to begin under first-year head coach
Jannel Snow and she is ready to begin the next chapter at Westminster College to build on the success from the past and to add a new voice from the sidelines as the season is near in 2023.
"We have seen tremendous progress with the team's skills due to their hard work and focus on the fundamentals, and I'm hopeful that their hard work will bring more success for the team during conference play," said Snow. "I want to honor the culture that was created here while still implementing some new ideas from my own past experiences, as well as Coach Ashley Tack's past experiences."
The season will begin on the road in Phoenix, AZ with two games starting with Dominican University of California on March 5 and then
Grand Canyon University the following day. Coach Snow is excited for the season to begin and is ready for the temperature to rise compared to the snow that has been falling on Dumke Field lately.
"I am incredibly excited about our first game on the road. It will be fun for us to continue to build strong relationships with one another on the 10-hour bus ride," said Snow "Our program has never played against Dominican before, so it will be great to match up against new personnel. Lastly, who wouldn't be excited about some 60–70-degree weather? It's perfect lacrosse weather!"
The Griffins will return back home after their weekend away in Arizona, to prepare for a familiar team in conference play, one reason it's familiar is that it's an RMAC opponent, and the other reason is Coach Snow has a familial tie to Colorado State University-Pueblo (on March 10) as she once coached at their school and their new coach.
"It is so exciting to see a former player of mine become the Interim Head Coach at CSUP. Coach Christensen will without a doubt bring some strong ideas to CSU-P," said Snow about the Interim Head Coach of CSUP. "Within the last few years, we have seen some turnover in coaches in the RMAC. I believe this change in coaching personnel is making the RMAC more dynamic and the competition stronger. There is also mutual respect among all the coaches in our conference: we all have a common goal to make our conference more formidable and increase the representation of Women's Lacrosse in the Rocky Mountain region."
The Westminster Griffins have a few returners this season that will help Coach Snow and her coaching staff in her first season. One of those players is
Lauren Shoughro who found the back of the net 30 times last season and she won't be the only Shoughro on the field this year who will look to help the Griffins improve from 4-8 in conference last season.
"Our 5
th-year captain
Lauren Shoughro is an incredibly talented leader on and off the field. She has been and will continue to be, a strong impact player for our team. She and her younger sister, Freshman
Shaina Shoughro, have a great dynamic in the midfield. We are excited to see how these two will play off of one another's strengths and create new opportunities in the circle. "
Another returnee is the one who will be in the cage this year and will be looking to make an impact right away Sophomore Goalie
Gabriella Cheminant who played in seven games last year which included two starts.
"Ella has been a formidable presence in the cage. It is not easy being the only goalie on a team, but Ella faces each mental and physical challenge with strength and poise. She sees at least 100 shots every day in practice. She will be a great asset to our defensive unit this season and has really stepped up as a leader, despite being an underclassman."
