Salt Lake City, UT - Despite a slow start to the game, the Westminster women's basketball had a surge in the second quarter, outscoring the Mavericks 20-6 as the Griffins found a way to snap their losing streak and defeat Colorado Mesa behind 17 points by
Ashley Greenwood in the 63-53 win on their home floor.
The Women's basketball team may have had a tough road trip recently, but sometimes all you need to do to get back on track is to feel comfortable, and being at home has felt comforting this season for the Griffins. With just over four minutes left to play in the first quarter, a turnover by Greenwood led to a Mavericks layup and that layup saw the Griffins trail by 10 points in the game, but as the quarter expired Greenwood hits a buzzer-beater and that changed the momentum for Westminster.
In the second quarter, the defense was fired up as the Mavericks only hit two field goals in the quarter and a total of six points as the Griffins cruised to halftime leading at the break.
Rae Falatea hit a big three-point shot in the win as she ended the night with 14 points, four rebounds, and two key steals,
Jaycee Lichtie who got the start tonight, finished the game with 13 points and brought down eight rebounds and she was the third leading scorer on the night.
The Griffins did most of their damage in the paint scoring 32 points in the post area and added 13 fast break points.
UP NEXT: The Griffins will get one day off before returning to the court on Thursday, Jan. 28 vs
Western Colorado University. Tip-off will be at 5:00 PM MDT. The game will be available for free on the RMAC Network (rmacnetwork.com) or the RMAC Network streaming app as Westminster continues their chase up the RMAC standings.
