BOCA RATON, Fla. - Spencer Whinery had four goals and two assists and Westminster men's lacrosse (1-1, 0-1 RMAC) scored six fourth-quarter goals to beat Lynn University (1-4, 0-0 SSC), 16-11, on Monday night.
Easton Albert and
Merritt McMahon each added two goals apiece and
Quinn Lewis finished with a team-leading six ground balls to go along with one goal and one assist. Lynn finished the game with a 43-38 edge in total shots but Westminster outscored the Fighting Knights, 6-3, in the final quarter to hold onto its tight second-half lead.
Westminster finished with a 17-14 edge in faceoff wins and
Gavin Beilman had 16 saves in net to earn his first win of the season.
McMahon picked up his first goal of the season to give Westminster first blood just 35 seconds into the game. The Fighting Knights evened the score at 1-1 just moments later before Westminster reeled off four straight goals including three from Whinery. McMahon added to his first-quarter goal with a pair of assists in the opening period. Whinery finished the first quarter with three goals on three shots and assisted on
Quinn Lewis's first goal of the season as the opening quarter expired.
Whinery continued his offensive prowess in the second, assisting on an
Easton Albert goal to answer an early second-quarter goal from Lynn. The two sides traded goals two more times with the Griffins taking an 8-5 lead into the halftime break.
Westminster owned a 12-9 edge in first-quarter shots, but the Fighting Knights out-shot Westminster, 25-13, in the second and third quarters combined. Tommy Ruddo scored for Lynn just 1 minute and four seconds into the second half and the Fighting Knights scored three of the first four goals out of the break to get back within one. McMahon scored his second of the night in the dying moments of the quarter to give the Griffins a two-goal cushion heading into the fourth.
Whinery netted his fourth of the night and
Carson Capps scored on a dish from Lewis in the opening minute of the fourth, but Lynn answered with three straight goals to cut the Griffins' lead back to one at 12-11. After
Skyler Weathers quickly answered with back-to-back goals,
Jacob Pickett and
Joseph Celentano added late goals to help Westminster control the final moments of its first win of the season.
