SALT LAKE CITY - Taylor Miller finished with a career-high 21 points on 8-of-9 shooting and Westminster men's basketball (10-15, 8-11 RMAC) held onto a one-possession lead in the final seconds to beat Colorado School of Mines (14-9, 12-7 RMAC), 80-78, on Friday night at Behnken Field House.
Westminster raced out to a 26-12 lead in the opening 10 minutes of the game, holding Colorado School of Mines to just 5-of-19 shooting to begin the game. Mines were held to just 2-of-12 (17 percent) from behind the arc in the first half but after its slow start, the Orediggers finished the half 7-of-14 from the field as a team.
Taylor Miller continued to knock down shots from all over the floor, going a perfect 5-of-5 with 14 of his 21 points in the first half. Miller would go 8-of-8 shooting to begin the night before missing a late three to finish at 8-for-9.
The Griffins closed the first half and began the second on a 9-0 run after beginning the second with three quick turnovers and three quick buckets, opening up a 16-point Westminster lead.
Westminster held a double digit lead for a majority of the second half and led by eight with 2:10 to play when Brendan Sullivan knocked down a trey to begin an 8-2 Mines' run. A made three-pointer from Mines' Ben Boone trimmed the Westminster lead to 80-78 and Colorado School of Mines held the final possession with 17 seconds to play.
On a night in which the Griffins shot a season-high 62 percent (33-of-53) as a team, the Westminster defense answered the bell to finish off Mines, forcing a missed three and the ensuing put-back attempt in the final seconds to pick up its sixth home win of the season.
Westminster will be back on its home court tomorrow night for its home finale against Regis, tipping-off at 7 p.m.
