SALT LAKE CITY - For a second straight night,
Taylor Miller scored a career-high, finishing with 27 points on 11-of-17 shooting as Westminster men's basketball (11-15, 9-11) defeated Regis (RV) (18-7, 13-6 RMAC), 72-53, on Saturday night at Behnken Field House.
Miller added eight boards on the night while
Matt Kitzman had 12 points and nine rebounds to help the Griffins finish with a 42-31 rebounding advantage while holding Regis to just 19-of-57 shooting as a team.
The Griffins played dominant defense out of the gate, forcing the Rangers to miss their first seven field goal attempts with three turnovers on an 11-0 Westminster run to begin the game. After setting a career-high with 21 points in Friday night's win over Colorado School of Mines,
Taylor Miller picked up where he left off and had 19 first-half points to lead all scorers.
Westminster closed the first half on a 10-0 run with the help of eight points from Miller, capped off by a three-pointer as time expired. The Griffins held Regis to just 8-of-31 (25.8 percent) shooting in the first half and just 2-of-10 from behind the arc to finish the half with a 41-24 halftime advantage.
Both sides slowed down offensively in the second half as the two teams went a combined for an 0-of-13 shooting stretch from the field before a successful
Brayden Johnson and-one put an end to a 4:10 scoreless drought for the Griffins. Westminster eventually found its shooting stroke as Miller added another eight second-half points to help Westminster finish the second half 10-of-27 shooting as a team.
Westminster will continue its push to improve its playoff seeding next week in its final two regular season games of the season as it travels to play at Fort Lewis and Western Colorado.
