Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Sky Hawks Outlast Westminster in Back-and-Fourth Second Half

Westminster was close late for a second-straight night at home but saw its second-half offense fall just short in a 67-59 loss to Fort Lewis.

SALT LAKE CITY - Westminster men's basketball (8-12, 6-8 RMAC) was outscored 11-3 over the final 2:27 in a 67-59 loss to Fort Lewis College (11-6, 7-4 RMAC) on Saturday night at Behnken Field House.

Matt Kitzman and Donaval Avila each scored 13 points and Taylor Miller added 11 off of the bench and Westminster held the Sky Hawks' leading scorer, Riley Farris, to just 13 points on 4-of-12 shooting overall and 2-of-6 from deep.  Westminster finished with nine offensive rebounds as a team and a 27-26 rebounding edge, but suffered from 18 turnovers as a team on the night.

Westminster went just 9-of-28 overall as a team in the opening half but owned a five-point advantage at the break after the Griffins closed the first half on an 11-4 run.  The Griffins continued to put Fort Lewis on its heals in transition to begin the second and took another five-point lead on a fast break bucket from Donaval Avila but the Sky Hakws offense was able to find its footing.

The two sides were deadlocked at 53-53 with 5:31 to play after a three from Brayden Johnson, but went scoreless over the next minute and a half when Johnson was fouled attempting another from long range.  Johnson converted on all three free throws and Farris later evened the game again at 56-56 with only 3:07 to play.

The Sky Hawks pulled back ahead on a late and-one from Corey Seng and the Griffins finished the night with only a single field goal over the final five minutes as Fort Lewis pushed its final margin to eight from the free throw line.

Westminster will be back at home next week hosting Colorado Mesa on Tuesday followed by S.D. School of Mines on Thursday, both games tipping-off at 7 p.m.
