SALT LAKE CITY - Reme Torbert scored a team-high 16 points and
Matt Kitzman added 10 but Westminster men's basketball (8-13, 6-9 RMAC) fell, 63-52, to Colorado Mesa (17-8, 11-5 RMAC) on Tuesday night at Behnken Field House.
Kitzman went 4-of-6 from the floor and added three rebounds while Torbert finished 3-of-6 from long range and also pulled in three boards.
Lewis Johnson led the Griffins with eight rebounds on the night but CMU was able to finish with a slight 34-33 edge on the glass.
Following a 44 percent shooting first half as a team, the Griffins held onto a two-point lead at the break despite CMU closing the half on an 8-0 run over the final 1:21. The Griffins jumped out to a commanding 16-point lead early in the first half as CMU missed 14 of its first 16 shots to begin the game.
The two teams reversed course in the second half as CMU knocked down 6-of-13 (46 percent) three-pointers and 12-of-27 field goals overall while the Griffins hit just 1-of-10 three's and went just 7-of-25 collectively in the second.
The Mavericks made two of the first three buckets out of the break to take its first lead since the early stages of the game and went on to lead by as many as 10 later in the half were able to get back within two possessions on a
Taylor Miller fastbreak dunk with 4:34 to play. Westminster was only able to connect on a pair of field goals over the final four minutes and knocked down a series of free throws to finish with the double-digit road win.
Westminster will be back at home on Thursday night as it hosts South Dakota School of Mines beginning at 7 p.m. back at Behnken Field House.
