Sophia DiGeronimo's first goal as a Griffin proved to be the game-winner against Black Hills State.
Westminster defeated the Yellowjackets 3-0, with goals from Digeronimo,
Alexa Maple and
Aimee Kurfurst. With the win the Griffins improve to 4-2-1 overall on the season and 2-1-0 in the RMAC.
It was an offensive assault as the Griffins earned 11 corner kicks and outshot the home side 28 to 8, with 15 shots on goal. Black Hills state put six shots on goal, but goalkeepers
Naomi Kehl and
Kelsea Cracroft combined for six saves to earn the shutout win.
Both teams opened the game with a chance in the opening four minutes. Dz-Rae Jara made the save to keep the Griffins off the score board and Kehl stopped Black Hills from getting on the scoresheet. Westminster's second shot of the contest was the game-winner as Digeronimo scored put the ball in the back of the net in the 10
th minute.
The Griffins had three attempts saved by the Yellowjacket's goalkeeper before Maple scored to give them a little security with a two-goal lead. Four more chances were turned away by Jara before the half ended. Kehl earned the first-half shutout with four saves on four shots faced.
Kurfurst finished the scoring with a goal in the 52
nd minute. Cracroft started in goal for the second half and made a save in the 68
th minute and one in the final minute to keep the clean sheet.
Twelve Griffins recorded a shot with 10 putting the shot on goal.
Rebecca Wheeler led the team with five attempts, followed by Kurfurst and Sami black with four shots and
Dominique Estrada who was 3-3 for shots on goal.
The Griffins wrap-up the regular season at home on Sunday, Apr. 11, against Colorado Mesa at 2:30 pm.
