Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Defeated By Mavericks

SALT LAKE CITY—Following with tradition of the final home game of the regular season, the women's soccer team recognized its seniors—Olivia Newbold, Hannah Taie, Kailee Balthazar-Chang, Aimee Kurfurst and Shea Kealoha-Kauanui—before the kickoff.

The Griffins (4-2-2, 3-2-0 RMAC) suffered their second loss of the season, falling 3-1 to Colorado Mesa. Alexa Maple scored late for Westminster's only goal.

The Griffins out shot the Mavericks by 13 but had just 8-24 shots on goal to the visitor's shooting 6-8. Trailing by two at half, the Griffins pushed harder offensively and their first half  shot tally with 16 shots in the second half.

The game started fast with five shots in the opening eight minutes. Mesa fired off two with less than two minutes played. Goalkeeper Naomi Kehl was called into action with a save in the bottom left corner with just 1:19 off the clock.

The Griffins recorded the next two attempts with a shot from Kurfurst and one from Maple.
Kurfurst shot to the lower-right corner in the fifth minute and Maple tested the goalkeeper in the eighth minute. Emily Signorio saved both attempts.

Mesa opened the scoring in the ninth minute throw Sophia Beames. A cross from the right side fell to Beames at the far post and she put the ball in the back of the net for the game's opening goal. Lila Dere scored 10 minutes later to give the Mavericks a little security.

Sami Black took Westminster's final shot of the half forcing Signorio into a diving save to the bottom left corner.

The Griffins aggressively started the half out shooting the Mavericks 6-2 in the first 15 minutes. Brynnae Braun, Maple an Echeverio each had a shot on goal but were unable to beat Mesa's goalkeeper. Mesa caught a bit of fortune as they countered the Griffins to score a third in the 62nd minute.

Sophia DiGeronimo came close to scoring her second goal of the season, stinging the crossbar with a right-footed shot from the right-corner of the penalty box.

The Griffins will begin preparations for the RMAC Championship less than two weeks.
