PUEBLO, Colo.—The Westminster men's lacrosse team ended a four-game losing streak by defeating CSU Pueblo, 16-9. The Griffins improved to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in the RMAC.
Pueblo scored the opening goal less than two minutes into the game.
Spencer Whinery scored Westminster's first goal and assisted Dylan Bauer and
Thiago Achcar-Winkels to take a one-point lead. The Thunderwolves scored three in a row to finish the period with a two-goal lead, 3-5.
Westminster shut the Thunderwolves out in the second period and scored three goals to take a one-point lead, 6-5, at the half.
Pueblo scored two early goals to take the lead. Within 15 seconds of losing the lead, Westminster scored to tie the game and went on a 9-0 run to finish the period ahead, 15-7. Odencrantz assisted Albert for the game-winner with seven minutes left in the third period.
Five goals in the final six minutes after a little over nine minutes scoreless in the fourth period.
Max Duxbury and
Heinz Quiroa scored for the Griffins as the game finished in their favor, 17-11.
Westminster out shot the Thunderwolves 26 to 29 with 31 shots on goal to 17. The Griffins won 23 of the 31 faceoffs, picked up 44 ground balls and caused nine turnovers. Pueblo picked up 21 ground balls and caused 12 turnovers.
Whinery and Odencrantz led the team with seven points. Whinery scored four goals and dished out three assists. Odencrantz scored twice and had a season-high five assists. Albert wasn't far off the pace with five points from four goals and one assist.
Carson Capps was 11-15 on faceoffs, second on the team with six ground balls and one of three with tow caused turnovers.
Kyle Williams was 9-11 on faceoffs and
Joseph Celentano led the team with seven ground balls.
Colbey Alsop and
Donnie Ginnetti each had two caused turnovers.
Jordan Penn was in goal, made six saves and picked up three ground balls.
The Griffins are at Adams State on Sunday, Apr. 11, at 12 pm. The game will be streamed on the RMAC Network.
