SALT LAKE CITY—A tough night for men's lacrosse who lost its RMAC opener to Colorado Mesa. The Griffins scored six points in the defeat to the Mavericks.
Merritt McMahon led the Griffins with three goals and
Mike Spaeth led the team with two assists.
Gavin Piva,
Andoni Odencrantz and
Blake Gross rounded out Westminster's scoring with a goal each. The Griffins dished out five assists with assists from
Quinn Lewis,
Will Dutton and
Dylan Brauer to go along with Spaeth's.
The Mavericks scored seven first period goals but were unable to maintain the high offensive production with four goals in the second period, three in the third and two in the fourth.
Spaeth assisted Odencrantz for Westminster's first goal which tied the game at one. Mesa jumped out in front with a 6-0 run, including the game-winner with a little over a minute left in the period.
Dylan Chatters won 19-26 faceoffs for the Mavericks who took 49 shots.
Gavin Beilman made 14 saves for the Griffins with five coming in the second period.
Cello Clark and Brauer led the team with three ground balls each. Clark and
Chance Beutler led the team with two caused turnovers.
The Griffins continue their conference schedule on the road at Adams State on Friday, Apr. 9, and CSU Pueblo on Sunday, Apr. 11.
