SALT LAKE CITY—
Mikala Davis put in a heroic performance making 19 saves, a season and program single-game record, to help the Griffins defeat UCCS 18-14.
"It was incredible from start to finish," Head Coach
Niki Harding said. "We played well on both sides of the field and were rewarded with some phenomenal goals and outstanding defensive play."
UCCS had nearly doubled Westminster's attempts on goal, out shooting the Griffins 49-27, but the Griffins were more accurate in there shooting with 22-27 (.814) on goal while the Mountain Lions went 33-49 (.673).
The few UCCS fans could be heard muttering and left in awe of Davis's performance between the pipes. Davis made 8 first half and 11 second half saves, including five free-position shot saves.
"Mikala played with heart and composure. Her focus was superb and the defense doing a good job slowing UCCS down is why she was able to make 19 saves," Harding said.
It was a career-high night for
Eden Freiberg who set a career-high 14 shots, nine on goal, seven goals and tied her game high three assists. She tallied 10 points for a team-high this season.
Melissa Reeves was just two points behind Freiberg with eight points from four goals and four assists.
Reeves and
Phebe Walker led the team in ground ball pick-ups. The pair each grabbed four ground balls.
Emmaline Russell and
Lauren Shoughro led the team with two caused turnovers each.
With three games left in the season, the win over the Mountain Lions (7-2, 3-2 RMAC) is important for the Griffins (3-5, 3-3 RMAC) as they continue to chase a qualifying place in the RMAC Championship. After Tuesday night's win, Westminster is fourth in the conference behind UCCS and ahead of CSU Pueblo (4-6, 2-3 RMAC).
The Griffins finish the season playing at Fort Lewis on Friday, Apr. 23, and are home against Adams State on Sunday, Apr. 25, and Colorado Mesa on Saturday, May 1.
