DURANGO, Colo.—
Eden Freiberg and
Melissa Reeves led the Griffins with five points each on Friday at Fort Lewis. The Griffins (3-6, 3-4 RMAC) lost by the narrowest of margins, 12-13, to the Skyhawks (3-5, 2-5).
The Griffins led for most of the first half and nearly half of the second.
Lauren Shoughro scored the game's opening goal within three minutes of the start. Fort Lewis scored a few minutes later. Madalyn Degarlais was assisted by
Grace Carico to regain the lead, a lead that would last the remainder of the half.
Fort Lewis scored to goals straight out of the half to reduce Westminster's lead to one, 8-7. The Griffins went up by two, 10-8, after a couple of Freiberg goals. The Skyhawks went on a 5-1 run to lead by two, 13-11, with seven minutes remaining.
Reeves assisted
Grace Carico to make it a one-goal game with four minutes to play. Carico and Freiberg each had a shot on goal in the final minutes, but goalie Averi Basso made the save to keep the lead.
Freiberg led the team in scoring with five goals from nine shots, eight on goal. Reeves tied Freiberg with five points from two goals and three assists.
Lauren Shoughro led the team with four ground balls. Shoughro and
Emmaline Russell both had a team-high three caused turnovers.
Hannah Bargeron faced 39 shots and made 14 saves.
The Griffins will finish the regular season at home against CSU Pueblo on Sunday, Apr. 25, at 11 am. They host Colorado Mesa on Saturday, May 1, at 1 pm.
