GUNNISON, Colo - Westminster volleyball benefited from eight service aces and eight blocks as a team, but fell in four sets, 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-21, 25-17), to Western Colorado on Friday night at the Paul Wright Gymnasium.
The Griffins dropped the first set but rebounded with a 25-23 second-set win, hitting a match-high .239 in the second frame. Western Colorado led the second set early, 6-2, before a commanding 10-0 run put the Griffins back in the match and in control of the second. Western went back in front late with a 7-0 run of its own to go ahead 20-18, but the Griffins shut the door by winning six of the next eight points to even the match with a 25-23 second-set win.
The two teams traded brief, early runs in the third set but it was Western that won five of the final six points to win the third, 25-21. The Griffins were held to a match-low .083 hitting in the third set and only managed a .083 hitting percentage in the fourth as Western Colorado finished the match with a 25-17 fourth-set win.
The Griffins will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as they travel south to take on Fort Lewis beginning at 3 p.m.
