LAKEWOOD, Colo. - Westminster (3-10, 1-4 RMAC) dropped a tight first set, 26-24, and were unable to keep pace offensively in a 3-0 loss at Colorado Christian (6-7, 3-2 RMAC) on Friday night at the CCU Event Center.
Bri Mortensen put up 21 assists and led the Griffins with her .429 hitting percentage, adding three kills on seven attacks but Westminster struggled offensively in its first match in Lakewood since 2017.Â
The Griffins, who defeated CCU, 3-1, at home back in March, led the first set 9-2 and held their lead through the early stages of the match.
CCU went on a 7-0 run to turn a three-point deficit into a three-point lead at 20-17. Westminster climbed back in front and had match point with its own 4-0 run to go up 24-23, but the Cougars went on to win three-straight points to take the first set, 26-24.
CCU never trailed in the second set and used a 7-2 run to go up 21-13. The Griffins won four-straight points to begin a late comeback attempt but went down two sets after an Alli Douglass kill and a Westminster attack error ended the set with a score of 25-20.
The Cougars pulled ahead with an 8-1 run early in the third and never looked back, finishing with their best team hitting percentage (.286) in the set to finish off the match with a 25-18 third-set win.
Westminster will be back in action on Saturday afternoon as it takes on second-ranked MSU Denver at 3 p.m.
