DENVER - Westminster volleyball (3-11, 1-5 RMAC) had just 22 kills as a team in a 3-0 loss at second-ranked MSU Denver on Saturday afternoon at the Auraria Event Center.
The Griffins suffered from season lows in hitting percentage (.061), kills (22) and assists (20), as Westminster was unable to find an answer the size and athleticism of No. 2 MSU Denver. The Roadrunners came into the weekend ranked No. 2 in the RMAC in hitting percentage and finished Saturday's three-set match with 46 kills while hitting .320 as a team.
Westminster jumped out to the first lead of the match in the first set with the help of three quick MSU Denver attack errors, but the Roadrunnners quickly found their offensive rhythm and finished the first set with 15 kills and a .294 hitting percentage as a team en route to a 25-16 first-set win.
The Griffins struggled to get balls over the net throughout the match and MSU Denver finished with eight blocks as a team in addition to a 10-4 advantage in service aces to prevent Westminster from gaining any long, momentum-swinging runs.
After trailing the Griffins in the second set at 4-3, MSU Denver never relinquished control of the match and led the rest of the way with 25-18 and 25-12 wins in the second and third sets, respectively.
Westminster will look to regroup next week before heading into second-straight RMAC road trip. The Griffins will face Western Colorado next Friday, Oct. 8, and Fort Lewis College on Saturday, Oct. 9, both on the road.
