KANSAS CITY, Mo.—Westminster's men's lacrosse opened the season on the Road against Rockhurst University on Friday. The Griffins suffered their first loss, 17-12.
Goalie
Sean Edwards and the defense were kept busy through first three periods as the Hawks outshot the Griffins 39-20 and winning 20-22 faceoffs. Edwards made 17 saves and the defense picked up 29 ground balls and caused nine turnovers.
The Griffins were highly efficient in the first three periods scoring eight goals and going 13-20 shots on goal.
Westminster's offensive picked up in the fourth quarter. The Griffins outshot the Hawks 22-7 and scored four goals.
The Griffins saw eight different goal scorers with three scoring multiple goals.
Spencer Whinery scored hat trick and
Nick Marcy and
Merritt McMahon both scored a brace.
Blake Gross and
Andoni Odencrantz scored their first goals of the season.
Gabe Mein,
Andrew Thomas and
Mike Spaeth joined McMahon for their first goals as a Griffin.
The Griffins face University of Indianapolis in a neutral site game at Rockhurst on Sunday at 10 am MST.
