Box Score PROVO, Utah—Westminster's men's basketball team lost 59-108 to BYU in an exhibition game to start the 2020-21 year.
The Griffins are essentially a new team this year with seven returners that combined for a total of 816 minutes over 28 games last season. Seven transfers and an incoming freshman make up the rest of the 15-man roster.
The newness showed as the Griffins opened the game with several fouls and turnovers early in the first half. After settling into the game, the team committed just six turnovers in the second half, nearly half that of the first half.
At half time Westminster trailed 31-54 shooting 39% from the field, 35.7%from the three and 80% from the free throw line.
Reme Torbert led the Griffins with 13 points making 4-7 from the field, 3-5 from three and 2-3 from the line.
BYU improved its shooting from 50 to 67% from the field and 43 to 50% from beyond the arc in the second half.
Jarrett Jordan scored seven points in the final minute to double his point tally for the night and contribute to a 9-2 run to finish the game.
"As much as you want to compete, it's a practice, it's an exhibition game," Head Coach
Norm Parrish said after the game. "We've got to be realistic and see what we can improve on."
"I don't worry about ourselves offensively. I think we will clean some things up and we will be fine," Parrish stated. "Defensively we've got to play with a lot more urgency."
Isaiah Banks, Torbert and Jordan led the team in minutes with more than 20 minutes each. Torbert finished the night as Westminster's leading scorer with 16 points, just two ahead of Jordan's 14. Banks led the team with six rebounds followed by
Brandon Willardson with four.
The Griffins are scheduled for another exhibition on Wednesday, 12/2, at UVU before hosting MSU Denver on Friday, 12/4, and Colorado Christian on Saturday, 12/5, in the Behnken Field House to begin the RMAC season.
