Griffins Held To Scoreless Draw In Season Opener

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah—Westminster women's soccer were held to a scoreless draw in its season opener against Texas A&M Commerce.

The Griffins dominated the score sheet, outshooting the Lions 32-9 with 10 shots on goal.  The opening minutes were slow as both teams looked for an advantage.  After a water break in the 24th minute, Westminster began to take control and finished the half with 14 shots.

Alexa Maple came closest to scoring in the 40th minute after her free kick came back to her and a second effort hit the right post and nearly rolled into the goal after bouncing off the back of a diving goalkeeper.

The Griffins took 10 second half shots but were unable to score the game winner as the Lions' goalkeeper Jen Peters made six saves denying the home team a game winner.

The Griffins took seven more shots in overtime but none found the target as the game finished in a draw, 0-0.

Goalkeeper Preslee Sudbury had a quiet night with three saves to earn a shutout.

Maple put three of her four shots on goal and Sara Weixler forced Peters into two saves with both of her shots.

The Griffins return to action on Saturday against Montana State University Billings at 1 pm.
