Box Score SALT LAKE CITY - Senior midfielder
Bella Riche scored a pair of goals as Westminster women's soccer picked up its first victory of the season, a 2-1 win over Montana State Universtiy - Billings.
"This was a complete performance and we played well from start to finish," head coach
Tony LeBlanc said. "We needed to correct a bit of our offense from that first game and I think we did just that. Proud of our effort and great game to show our depth as well."
Riche started the scoring early, giving the Griffins a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute, her first goal of the season. Westminster midfielder
Sarah Reiber intercepted an errant Yellowjacket pass at midfield and immediately found Riche. Riche took a few touches toward middle of the field and fired a left-footed shot just outside the box that beat MSUB keeper Errin Harder diving to her left.
Westminster controlled the pace of the game throughout the first half, taking 8 shots to MSUB's 1 and entered the locker room with a 1-0 lead.
The Yellowjackets came out firing in the second half, pressuring the Griffins back line early and often. MSUB's Haylee Gunter tied the game in the 56th minute. Gunter found midfielder Summer Miles, and Miles played a ball back to Gunter on the run at the top of the box. She took a touch into the box and sent a shot just over the outstretched hands of leaping Westminster goalkeeper
Preslee Sudbury.
Riche's response and second goal of the game came just eight minutes later in the 64th minute, when a Westminster clearance found Riche on the run. She had a defender on her back as she approached the box, and slotted home a great finish which would prove to be the game winner.
The Westminster defense limited MSUB's chances throughout the game, giving up just four shots. The Griffins attacked relentlessly, putting up a total of 16 shots and five corner kicks.
With the victory, the Griffins improve to 1-0-1 on the season. Westminster will head east to New Hampshire to play Franklin Pierce University on Thursday, September 12 and Bentley University on Saturday, September 14.
