SALT LAKE CITY – Westminster women's soccer (4-0-2, 1-0-1 RMAC) picked up its first conference win in dominating fashion, shutting out Black Hills State (1-5-1, 1-1-1 RMAC) 3-0 on Friday at Dumke Field.
"This was a great overall performance from our team," head coach
Tony LeBlanc said. "We were able to move the ball well, looked vey organized and scored some really strong goals. It was nice to get more players in the game today and I thought our subs did a great job. Overall, we're very pleased with our play."
Westminster remained unbeaten in 2019 and handed Black Hills State its first conference loss of the season. The Yellow Jackets started RMAC play last weekend with a win over Adams State and a tie against Fort Lewis College.
The Griffins got on the board in the 23
rd minute when
Emily Pascua fired a right-footed shot from well outside the box that flew past Black Hills State goalkeeper Dz-Rae Jara's leaping attempt and into the upper netting of the goal.
Pascua initially took a shot that was blocked by a Yellow Jacket defender, and the ball made it back to her on a quick pass from
Brynnae Braun after a series of touches by both teams. It was Pascua's first goal of the season.
Westminster made it a 2-0 game just before halftime.
Aimee Kurfurst scored on a left-footed shot in front of the goal, her first of the year.
Ellie Echeverio received a pass on the run in the box and directed a touch to Kurfurst, who put it home in the upper left corner of the net.
Hannah Taie gave the Griffins a 3-0 lead in the 89
th minute.
Abby Keeley found Taie outside of the box directly in front of the goal. She took one touch and then took a shot into the upper right corner of the net.
The Griffins dominated the run of play and peppered Jara throughout the game. Westminster finished with 32 shots from 13 players and forced Jara into 12 saves.
Westminster played a total of 23 players in the game.
