Men's Lacrosse Are the 2019 RMAC Champions

Goalies come up big with 24 saves in win over Thunderwolves

PUEBLO, Colo.—Westminster's men's lacrosse (8-6, 5-0 RMAC) are the 2019 Regular Season Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) Champions.  This is the first for the program and first for Westminster since joining the RMAC in 2015.
 
It took some time, but Westminster eventually took control of the game with 14 unanswered goals.  The Thunderwolves took a 1-0 lead with the games opening goal and held the Griffins scoreless for nearly 15 minutes. 
 
Blake Gross scored to equalize, 1-1.  Easton Albert and Will Dutton each scored to give Westminster a 3-1 lead and some momentum going into the second period.
 
Westminster scored 11 goals and shutout the home side, in the second and third periods, for a commanding lead, 14-1.
 
Westminster scored three more in the fourth and saw the game out for the final score, 17-6.
 
The game was almost even in the stat book, despite the score line.  Westminster's goalies made the biggest difference, coming up with 24 saves.
 
Sean Edwards earned the win with 15 saves in the first half.  Phil Cannell made five in the third period and Gavin Beilman and Jordan Penn combined for six saves in the fourth period.
 
Westminster's offensive display saw 15 players record a goal or an assist.  Nick Marcy had a terrific night and led with three goals and five assists.  Kolton Atkinson (3 goals), Will Dutton (2 goals, 1 assist) and Easton Albert (2 goals, 1 assist) all had three points.
 
Kyle Williams took charge on the face-off and went 8-22.  He caused one turnover and led the team with five ground balls.  Andoni Odencrantz grabbed four ground balls and Chase Flinders and Harrison Nye grabbed three each.
 
Westminster could finish with a perfect conference record, 6-0, with a win at Adams State on Sunday.  The Griffins will host the Men's Lacrosse RMAC Championship next Friday, 5/3, and Saturday, 5/4.
