Griffins Defeat Grizzlies to Remain Unbeaten in Conference

Westminster men's lacrosse defeated Adams State 12-6.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah—The men's lacrosse team defeated Adams State, 12-6, to remain unbeaten in conference and improve to 5-6 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
 
The Griffins scored three quick goals in the opening five minutes and shut the Grizzlies out for a 3-0 first period lead. Nick Marcy assisted Kolton Atkinson for the games opening goal two minutes in.  Cole Flinders scored the teams second less than a minute later and Chance Beutler scored 19 seconds later.
 
Adams State picked up a dropped ball halfway through the second half and took advantage of an open goal for its first goal of the game and only goal of the first half.  Westminster Scored two more goals before half and finished in the lead, 6-1.
 
A flood of goals came in the third period as both teams combined for 10 goals.  Spencer Whinery recorded his first goal of the game and the game winner in the third minute of the third period.  Flinders scored his second goal to put the Griffins up 8-1 then the visitors got hot and went on a 4-1 run over three minutes cutting their deficit down to four.
 
Mitchell Senour won the next faceoff and raced down the middle of the field and fired a shot past the Grizzly goalie.  Atkinson and Whinery both scored to finish the period up seven, 12-5.
 
Adams State scored the only goal of the fourth period to finish the game, 12-6, in favor of Westminster.
 
Westminster out shot the Grizzlies 47-29 with 29 shots on goal forcing the Adams State goalie to make 17 saves.
 
Senour scored on his only shot of the game and led the team with nine ground balls.  He finished 14-21 on faceoffs.
 
Atkinson led the team with five points.  He scored four goals and had one assist.  He took nine shots with six on goal.
 
Nick Marcy was second on the team with three points from a goal and two assists.  Whinery and Flinders each scored a pair of goals.  Will Dutton and Beutler wrapped up the scoring with a goal a piece.
 
The Griffins host Colorado State University Pueblo on Sunday at Dumke Field.
