Men's Soccer Remains In Second

Griffins defeat Fort Lewis 2-0

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah--Two defenders scored in Westminster's 2-0 win over Fort Lewis (6-4-3, 3-4-1 RMAC). The Griffins sit second in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a 9-3-2, 6-1-2 RMAC record.

"The team played very well and managed the game well after the second goal," Head Coach Josh Pittman said. "A fortunate goal from Preston McIllece and Hansen's second half goal provided another hug win for the program."

Westminster out shot the Fort Lewis 15-5 and only allowed one shot on goal. The Skyhawks started the game quickly taking two shots and forcing Will Desantis into a save in the opening three minutes. The Griffins took their first shot in the 13th minute and began to control the game from there.

A little bit of fortunate helped with the first goal. Adir Hazout played a ball into the right corner for Preston McIllece. McIllece's cross drifted over goalkeeper Peter Byrne and fell into the goal at the back post.

Bridger Hansen nearly scored in teh 37th minute but Byrne made a split second reaction to push Hansen's shot over the goal.

McIllece came close to scoring his second goal with a header at the back post. Again Byrne reacted quickly to keep the Griffins out.

Westminster doubled its lead just two minutes into the second half. The Skyhawks failed to deal with a long throw-in and it bounced around precariously before Bridger Hansen poked it past Byrne.

Westminster's flexed its muscle, only allowing two shots in the half, and recorded its 10th shutout of the season.

The Griffins are on the road next weekend at Colorado State University Pueblo on Friday  and Adams State on Sunday.
