SALT LAKE CITY, Utah--Westminster men's lacrosse team overcame a slow first half to defeat Maryville University, 10-2. The Griffins are 1-0 in conference play and improve to 3-2 overall.
Westminster got off to a slow start against Maryville. The Griffins only took four shots in the first quarter and scored one of those chances. They more than doubled their opportunities in the second half and scored two more goals to lead at halftime, 3-2.
The second have performance was much better. A goal from
Christian Pompoco got the home side started 4 four minutes in. Land Kadish,
Blake Gross, and
Brad Belasco each scored to finish the third quarter with an 8-2 lead.
The home side continued to dominate the second half, taking 10 shots and scoring three more goals.
Cole Flinders scored the final goal for the Griffins after
Nick Marcy had put two past the Maryville goalie.
The Griffins held the visitors to 19 shots and only allowed two goals. Phillip Cannel came up with three saves, Connor McFarlance made four and
Jordan Penn made one save. The team collected 27 ground balls and caused eight turnovers.
Kadish, Westminster's leading goal scorer, only scored one goal but tallied four assists to lead the team in points. Gross had three points with three goals. Marcy, Belasco,
Thomas Sarjeant and
Bridger Fisher each recorded two points through goals or assists.
Grant Phillips and
Harrison Nye each caused two turnovers. Nye also collected five ground balls to lead the team.
Kevin Tyler tallied four ground balls and Kyle Williams picked up three.
Westminster plays the next four games on the road, beginning with a trip to Florida where they will play Lynn University, Tuesday, March 13, and Rollins college, Friday, March 16. The Griffins next home game is Saturday, March 31, against Johnson & Wales University-Colorado.
