Griffins Notebook: WBB begins the new year on the road

Basketball travels to Colorado Christian and Colorado School of Mines

WEEK IN REVIEW - WEEKEND WARRIORS

The women's basketball team defeated the Colorado School of Mines on December 30th.  Westminster improves to  a 5-6 overall record and a 4-3 record in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.  The Griffins are 4-0 playing on Saturday in the conference.
 
During the holiday break, the women's team traveled to Idaho State University for an exhibition game and played a conference game against Colorado School of Mines.
 
The game against Idaho State marked the third exhibition game against a Division I opponent this season.  The Bengals were 50 percent from the field and hit nine 3-pointers to defeat the Griffins 83-45.
 
The Griffins won an exciting game against Colorado School of Mines, 68-66, in overtime.
 
The Griffins shot 31.3 percent from the field and held a slight advantage over the Orediggers who shot 26.5 percent.  Westminster held a one-point lead at half-time, 25-24.
 
The Orediggers hit a three to begin the third quarter and had the lead for close to four minutes.  The Griffins finished the quarter with a 12-4 run and ended the half with a six-point lead, 41-35.
 
With 5:22 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Griffins held their largest lead, 10-points, over the Orediggers.  With eight seconds remaining, the Orediggers had reduced the lead to one-point.  Denise Gonzalez increased the lead to two after splitting a pair of free throws.  The Orediggers tied the game with a layup with one second remaining to force overtime.
 
The Griffins outscored the away team nine-to-seven, scoring a 3-pointer and six free throws, to win, 66-64.

UPCOMING GAMES

The Griffins travel to play Colorado Christian University on Thursday, and Friday is a rematch of last weekend's game against Colorado School of Mines.  Thursday's game is scheduled to tip-off at 5 p.m., and Saturday's game is scheduled to tip-off at 1 p.m.

GRIFFINS BY NUMBERS

Denise Gonzalez leads the team in scoring with 139 points, averaging 12.6 points per game.  Gonzalez has 54 assists, 30 steals and five blocks.  She is second in rebounding with 55 boards collected.
 
Hunter Krebs is second on the team in scoring with 125 points, averaging 11.4 points per game.  Krebs averages 6.4 rebounds per game and leads the team with 70.
 
Sicille Williams, Sydnee Taylor and Karlee Carlsen have each scored more than 80 points.  Williams has 92, Taylor has 88 and Carlsen has 84.
 
Shelley Max leads the team in shooting from beyond the arc.  Max has scored 67 points, scoring 13 of 38 from 3-point range.  Kaylee Carlsen and Krebs have each made 10 3-pointers.
 
SCOUTING COUGARS
 
The Cougars are 11th in the RMAC with an overall record 4-8 and a RMAC record 2-5.  The two conference wins are against
Adams State and Black Hills State.

Jordan Baer leads the team in scoring with 135 points, averaging 11.3 points per game.  Haley Shaner is second on the team in scoring with 114 points and Alex Nelson is third with 107 points.  Nelson leads the team in points per game, averaging 15.3.
 
Baer leads the team with 84 rebounds, collecting 7.0 per game.  Shaner is second with 51 rebounds, 4.3 per game.  Sarah McGinley has 45 rebounds, averaging 4.2 per game.

Colorado School of Mines is 8-5 in all competition and 5-2 in the RMAC with a 5-3 home record.  The Orediggers have defeated UCCS, South Dakota Mines, Black Hills State, Regis and Chadron State.
 
Nicole Archambeau leads the team in scoring with 180 points, averaging 13.8 points per game.  Emily Bailey is second on the team in scoring with 159 points and Anna Kollmorgen is third with 125 points.  Bailey averages 12.2 points per game and Kollmorgen averages 9.6.
 
Budge Cassidy has scored 24 3-pointers in 13 games, averaging 1.85 per game.
 
Archambeau  leads the team with 139 rebounds, collecting 10.7 per game.  Elizabeth Tomon is second with 81 rebounds, 6.2 per game.  Kollmorgen has 69 rebounds, averaging 5.3 per game.

Westminster is in its third year as a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference at the NCAA Division II level. Last year the Griffins finished ninth in the RMAC standings with a 9-13 conference record and an 11-15 overall record.
