PUEBLO, Colo. – The Westminster men's lacrosse team suffered its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference loss of the season as they were defeated by Colorado State – Pueblo on Friday night at Gonzales Stadium.
Westminster (3-3, 3-1 RMAC) had a 10-8 lead entering the fourth quarter after
Thomas Sarjeant scored twice in the final four minutes of the third. CSU-Pueblo (4-3, 2-3 RMAC) took an 11-10 lead with three straight goals to start the period.
Ezra Schofield pulled the Griffins even with 7:55 to play before the ThunderWolves countered with two straight to lead 13-11 with 7:31 to play.
Nick Marcy got the Griffins within 13-12 with his goal at the 2:56 mark.
Troy Vance had his attempt to tie the game turned away by CSUP goalie Nick Richards with 1:40 on the clock. The home side then countered with an insurance goal at the 1:24 mark and the Griffins final two shots were off target.
This is the first loss in program history when they Griffins have held a lead after three quarters, a span of 117 consecutive wins.
Westminster took 39 shots in the game with 25 of them on cage. They won 17 of 30 faceoffs with a 32-29 edge in ground balls. The Griffins were 18 of 26 in clearing chances and failed to score on four extra-man opportunities. Each team committed 26 turnovers.
Sarjeant and
Blake Bruner led the Griffin offense with three goals and one assist apiece. Marcy added two goals and an assist. Sarjeant took a team-high 10 shots.
Dalton Tuor won 17 of 28 faceoff attempts and led the team with six ground balls.
Conner McFarlane suffered the loss in cage for the Griffins with 11 saves.
Pueblo took 30 shots and put 25 on goal. They scored one extra-man goal in two attempts and tallied a man-down goal.
Blake Foerster led the Pack with five goals and one assist. Richards finished with 13 saves.
Westminster now heads for Alamosa, Colo. where they will face Adams State on Sunday. Opening faceoff from the ASU Lacrosse Field is slated for noon.
