Griffins Ride Fourth Quarter Run to Win at Rockhurst

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Westminster men's lacrosse team snapped a two-game losing skid with a 10-7 win at Rockhurst in an important Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game on Friday night at Bourke Field.
 
Westminster (2-2, 2-0 RMAC) used four consecutive goals in the fourth quarter to secure the victory. They earn a season sweep of Rockhurst (7-3, 2-3 RMAC) and have defeated the Hawks five straight times.
 
The game was tied at 5-5 after three quarters after the home squad overcame a 4-1 Griffins second-quarter lead. Nick Marcy opened the fourth quarter with a goal for the Griffins before Jake Martin pulled Rockhurst even at 6-6 with 12:11 remaining.
 
Troy Vance put the Griffins in front for good with his second goal of the game with 10:28 to play. He then completed the hat trick by scoring again at the 5:55 mark. Thomas Sarjeant followed those two tallies with second and third goals of the night to put the Griffins ahead 10-6 with 1:09 on the clock.
 
Conner McFarlane was stellar in cage for the Griffins and kept them in the game by making six saves in the first quarter. He then closed out his career-high 14 save night with four stops in the fourth quarter in earning his second win of the season.
 
It took a solid night from McFarlane as Rockhurst finished the game with a 43-22 edge in shot attempts. The Hawks earned many of those extra chances by winning 19 of 21 faceoffs while adding a 31-19 advantage in ground balls.
 
Along with tying for the team lead with three goals apiece, Sarjeant and Vance each took a team-high five shots. Marcy and Bridger Fisher finished with one goal and one assist apiece. Christian Pompoco and Nick Stasch had the other two goals for the Griffins with Jake Berard and Blake Bruner adding an assist each.
 
Westminster forced their opponents into 15 turnovers and Ryan Coffelt and Grant Phillips each recorded two caused turnovers. McFarlane led the team with four ground balls with Nathan Wade getting three.
 
Each team went 1 of 3 on extra-man opportunities and the Griffins were 19 of 24 in clearing chances.
 
Chris Schveninger led the Hawks with two goals and two assists. Martin also had two goals.
