Griffins Overcome Cold to Down Rockhurst, 9-7

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Westminster men's lacrosse team got back into Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play by defeating Rockhurst 9-7 on Saturday morning at Falcon Stadium.
 
It took the two teams a few minutes to settle into the chilly conditions at the United State Air Force Academy. Westminster (3-1, 2-0 RMAC) surrendered the opening goal with 8:49 to play in the first quarter before the Griffins closed with the final three tallies of the quarter.
 
Elias Fairman scored the Griffins first goal of the game to record his 100th career goal on a feed from Josh Holland.
 
After Cole Flinders notched back-to-back goals the Griffins lead was 4-1 early in quarter two. The teams would then alternate two-goal spurts for the next two-plus quarters and with 10:56 remaining the Westminster lead was 8-7.
 
Flinders would complete the hat trick at the 2:37 mark of the fourth quarter on a feed from Thomas Sarjeant to seal the win for the Griffins.
 
Westminster took 49 shots in the game with 25 on cage. They won 13 of 20 faceoffs and took the ground ball battle, 32-19. The Griffins were 21 of 23 in clearing attempts and they forced Rockhurst into 22 turnovers.
 
Christian Pompoco had a pair of goals in the win and Sarjeant added a goal and two assists. Holland took a team-best 11 shots.
 
Jake Berard won 10 of 14 faceoffs and led the team with five ground balls. Grant Phillips led the Griffins with two caused turnovers. Philip Cannell earned the win in cage with six saves.
 
Michael Beckham led Rockhurst with four goals on eight shots. Alex Pfeil suffered the loss despite making 16 saves.
 
The Griffins will now take two weeks off before facing Rockhurst again on April 3 in Grand Junction, Colo.
