GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Westminster men's lacrosse team remained perfect in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play thanks to a fourth quarter rally and a 12-11 win against Rockhurst in overtime on Sunday afternoon.
"Hats off to Coach Kelley and his boys," Westminster head coach
Mason Goodhand said of the Rockhurst coach and team. "They outplayed us in almost every stat except the one that counts the most."
Westminster (4-1, 3-0 RMAC) was trailing 9-5 at the 6:45 mark of the third quarter when Rockhurst (7-5, 3-4) completed a span that saw the Hawks score six of the game's previous seven goals. The Griffins would get a goal from
Christian Pompoco in the final minute of the quarter to give them some momentum.
Â
They would then start the fourth with a man-advantage and took advantage by scoring twice in the first minute.
Thomas Sarjeant notched a goal with 13:26 to play and the comeback was complete and the game was even at 9-9.
Â
Things looked good for the Griffins when
Josh Holland put one away at the 3:20 mark to put Westminster in front, 11-10. After Westminster won the ensuing faceoff, Rockhurst forced a turnover and got a goal from Alex Hebson with 10.2 seconds to play to force overtime.
Â
In the extra period, Westminster won the faceoff and had possession for most of the frame. The Griffins put a couple of shots wide and then had one blocked that resulted in a breakout for the Hawks,
Philip Cannell made a save with under a minute on the clock and then started the Griffins in transition.
Â
Elias Fairman had his shot deflected away by the Rockhurst goalie. On the following restart,
Blake Bruner fed Fairman at the top of the crease for the game-winning goal with 2.6 seconds to play.
Â
Rockhurst had a 40-34 edge in shots during the game and they won 16 of 25 faceoffs. The Griffins took 34 shots with 20 on cage and were 19 of 22 in clearing attempts.
"One advantage on which we were able to capitalize was senior leadership," added Goodhand. "Elias scored the winner in OT but Josh, Pace, Dom and Stouty all played a huge part in keeping us focused on the next play when the game wasn't going our way."
Â
Holland led the Griffins with three goals on eight shots. Sarjeant added three assists to his goal to match Holland for tea-best with four points. Pompoco, Fairman and
Troy Vance all scored two goals.
