Women’s Basketball Notes – February 17

THIS WEEK
The Westminster women's basketball team returns to the Behnken Field House this weekend to play their final two home games of the season. The Griffins will host Regis University on Friday before facing Chadron State College on Saturday.
 
Both games will begin at 5:30 p.m. MT and tickets are available at WestminsterGriffins.com/tickets. The Griffins will honor their three seniors in a ceremony following the game on Saturday.

ABOUT WESTMINSTER
Westminster enters the final two home games of the season at 10-13 overall and 7-12 in RMAC play. They are currently tied for 11th in the conference standings with three games to play. The Griffins have gone 5-5 at home this season and split every home conference weekend this season.
 
The Griffins are currently 13th in the RMAC by scoring 58.6 points per game. They shoot 38.7 percent from the field and are third in the conference by making 73.2 percent from the foul line. The team is making 6.8 3-pointers per game and they shoot 31.3 percent from beyond the arc.
 
The Griffins are holding the opposition to 60.6 points per game and 39.2 percent shooting. Westminster is fifth in the conference by allowing just 29.5 percent shooting from three and they force 13.0 turnovers per game while blocking 2.74 shots.
 
Aubrie Vale has come on down the stretch and now leads the team in scoring at 10.6 points per game. She is 23rd in the RMAC in scoring while placing 10th in the conference by making 1.8 treys per game. Denise Gonzalez averages 10.1 points per night and leads the team with 78 assists and 36 steals.
 
Jessica Sorensen leads the team with 136 rebounds and she is fourth in the conference by getting 3.2 offensive rebounds per game. Mika Pinner has 126 rebounds and is third in the RMAC by averaging 1.9 blocked shots per contest.
 
LOOKING BACK
Westminster matched its longest winning streak of the season by winning at South Dakota Mines, 61-53, for a third straight win last Friday. The Griffins shot 41.4 percent from the field in a game they led for nearly 35 minutes of action. They grabbed 15 offensive rebounds and turned them into 13 points.
 
That streak came to an end with a 55-46 loss at Black Hills State on Saturday. Westminster trailed by one heading to the fourth quarter when they were outscored 14-6 by Black Hills State. Aubire Vale scored 16 points to lead the Griffins in scoring. She made 4 of 6 from three and grabbed five rebounds.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
•Regis –
The Rangers start the week at 16-9 overall and 14-5 in the RMAC. They have secured a berth into the RMAC Tournament and are still alive for a home game in the opening round. Regis has gone 6-5 on the road this season and they have won 10 of the last 11 overall. Bay'lee Purdy is fourth in the league in scoring at 15.0 points per game.
 
•Chadron State – The Eagles start the week at 8-15 overall and 8-11 in the RMAC. They have gone 4-6 on the road during the year and they have dropped four of their past five games. Maka Daysh leads the Eagles and ranks third in the RMAC by scoring 15.5 points per game.
 
SERIES NOTES
This weekend will complete the season series with each opponent and mark the second all-time meeting in each series. Regis won the previous meeting, 55-44, on January 23 in Denver. Chadron State defeated the Griffins 71-58 on January 22 in Chadron, Neb.
 
500 GAMES PLAYED
Westminster played the 500th game in program history on January 2 against South Dakota Mines. The Griffins won 308 times in those 500 outings with nine 20-win seasons. This is the 17th season of women's basketball at Westminster and the program has gone 313-199 in that time to record a .611 winning percentage.
 
FRESHMAN SENSATION
Denise Gonzalez has taken over point guard duties from the start of the season and she currently second on the team in scoring at 10.1 points per game. Gonzalez is sixth in the conference by averaging 3.4 assists per game while ranking 16th at 1.6 steals per game.
 
DEFENSIVE PRESENCE
Mika Pinner has recorded a team-best 42 blocked shots and has had multiple blocks in a game 13 times. She currently ranks third in the RMAC by blocking 1.9 shots per game. Her 42 blocks are the second-most in a season in team history. Pinner is fourth in school history with 71 career blocks and her 1.39 blocks per game is on pace to establish a new school record.
 
FINISHING STRONG
Aubrie Vale has scored in double figures during eight of the team's previous 10 games and she currently leads the team in scoring at 10.6 points per game. For the season, vale has scored in double figures 13 times with two 20-point outings. During the 10 game span, Vale is averaging 14.0 points per game and shooting 42.9 percent from beyond the arc.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
Westminster will conclude their inaugural season in the RMAC next weekend with a road game at Colorado Mesa on February 26. The season finale will tip at 5:30 p.m. MT and be broadcast live on Griffins TV.
