SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's soccer team wrapped up the 2016 season with a 2-1 win over Embry-Riddle (Fla.) on Tuesday afternoon at Dumke Field.
Westminster finished the season at 10-4-3 overall to record a seventh straight 10-win season. They were 6-3-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference games to finish in fifth-place with 21 points.
It was a pair of seniors that scored the Griffins goals on Tuesday. The first came in the seventh minute when
Madison Roemer headed in a corner kick from
Alicia May for the 13th goal of the season.
Just two minutes later,
Maddie Klein notched her first goal of the season when she finished a scramble in the penalty area following another corner kick from May. After a Roemer header took a deflection,
McKell Kellogg played the ball to Klein for the goal.
The Griffins dominated much of the play, but a foul on a counter attack led to the Embry-Riddle (8-5-2) goal. Stine Naess Berge played the free kick into the penalty area from just inside the Griffins half. Hanna Rolfsen got her head to the ball and directed it into the net for her first goal of the season.
Westminster had a 19-4 advantage in shots on the day and they were able to put 12 of those on goal. They took nine corner kicks and didn't allow any to the Eagles.
Roemer finished the final game of her career with five shots. Her 13 goals this season are tied for the second-most in team history.
Abi Black would get three shots off while
Heidi Lorschider,
Skye Jefferies and Klein had two apiece.
Breanna Empey made one save to earn the win in goal.
