Griffins Rally for 2-1 Win against Fort Lewis

SALT LAKE CITY – It took a pair of second half goals, but the Westminster women's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 win over Fort Lewis on Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play at Dumke Field on Sunday.

Westminster (8-2-3, 5-1-3 RMAC) used a goal from Heidi Lorschider in the 75th minute to win a game that they were trailing for the first time since September 3, 2015. Lorschider's winner came on a left-footed shot from 35 yards away that hit the right post and deflected into the goal. It was the fifth goal of the season for the senior and her first game-winner since the 2014 season.

Fort Lewis (6-6-1, 5-4) took the lead in the 29th minute when Alicia Sanchez headed in a cross by Renee Terrell. The shot had just enough momentum to get past the Westminster keeper, Breanna Empey, and into the goal.

The Griffins leveled the game at 1-1 in the 68th minute on a header from Madison Roemer. The RMAC's leading scorer headed a corner kick from McKell Kellogg off the crossbar and just over the line for her ninth goal of the season.

Roemer led the offensive effort with six of the team's 19 total shots. The Griffins put 10 shots on goal with three from Roemer and two apiece by Jayne Christensen, Abi Black, and Emily Pascua.

Westminster took six corner kicks while allowing four. Fort Lewis finished the afternoon with five shots and they Skyhawks put four on goal.

Empey made three saves to secure her eighth with of the season.

The Griffins will make their final road trip of the season next weekend. They begin the action on Friday at New Mexico Highlands at 7 p.m.
