Griffins Score Late to Down Adams State

SALT LAKE CITY – The Westminster women's soccer team extended its home unbeaten streak to four straight games with a 2-1 win over Adams State on Friday afternoon at Dumke Field in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

The competitive first half saw Westminster (7-2-3, 4-1-3 RMAC) take the lead in the 26th minute as Jayne Christensen created space at the top of the penalty area where she could put a shot inside the left post for her first career goal.

That lead held for just over four minutes when Shelby McBain pulled Adams State (7-5, 4-4) even when her corner kick sailed through the congestion at the goal and into the net for her first goal of the season.

Each team took six shots in the first 45 minutes. Adams State applied the early pressure in the second half before the Griffins took control. The home side outshot ASU 10-1 in the second half and they broke through for the winner on their seventh straight attempt of the period.

Jacqueline Williams would be the one that found the difference maker. After seeing chances sail high and wide in the 76th minute, Williams saw another shot saved in the 80th minute. That ball took a deflection to her feet where Williams redirected into the net for her first career goal.

Williams led the Griffins with five shots on she day and she was the only player to put two attempts on goal. The team saw seven of its 16 shots on frame with five turned away by the ASU keeper.

Breanna Empey would earn the win in goal for the Griffins with two saves, including the only shot on goal by the Grizzlies in the second half with four minutes to play.
