Women’s Soccer Defeated by Fort Lewis, 2-1

DURANGO, Colo. – The Westminster women's soccer team completed its opening weekend of road games with a 2-1 loss at Fort Lewis on Sunday afternoon in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action.

Westminster (4-3, 1-3 RMAC) fell behind in the 12th minute when Shayla Malecki scored her second goal of the season. Brooke Millet played the ball into the area from the right side where it found Malecki for the early advantage.

The lead only lasted 31 seconds before the Griffins got an equalizer. Rylei North took the initial shot that was deflected away. McKell Kellogg found the rebound and tapped it into the goal for her first career goal.

The game remained level at 1-1 through halftime and into the 54th minute when Fort Lewis (5-2-1, 3-1) found the winner. Alicia Sanchez dribbled through the defense and took the shot after taking a throw-in from Millet to score her third goal of the year.

Fort Lewis finished the afternoon with a 10-8 edge in shot attempts with the Griffins putting four of their chances on goal. Alicia May took a team-best two shots with one on goal. Breanna Empey took the loss in goal with two saves in her first career start.

Westminster now returns home for three games at Dumke Field next week. This first of those outings comes on Wednesday when they host Colorado Mesa at 5 p.m.
