SALT LAKE CITY – A goal in the 88th minute from
Alicia May sent the Westminster women's soccer team home with a 1-0 win over Colorado Mesa on in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on Wednesday afternoon at Dumke Field.
Westminster (5-3, 2-3 RMAC) snapped a three-game losing skid with the win behind the first goal of the season from May. After Colorado Mesa (1-7-1, 1-4) was called for a foul near the right sideline,
Korral Koehler played the following free kick into the penalty area. When the defenders couldn't clear the ball,
McKell Kellogg slid a pass to May who tapped it in the goal with less than two minute showing on the clock.
The Griffins took 12 shots in the game and they got six of them on goal. They held the visiting side to just six shots and only two on goal. CMU had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks and they were called for seven fouls to six by Westminster.
Abi Yanke earned the win in goal and moved into a tie for the Westminster all-time lead with her 18th career shutout. The senior recorded two saves to earn the victory.
Madison Roemer led the Griffin attack with five shots and two on goal.
Madeline Orr and
Heidi Lorschider had two shots apiece for the Griffins.
Westminster will continue their three-game home stand on Friday when they welcome MSU Denver to Dumke Field at 2:30 p.m. MT.
